Abstract
In this article, I propose to accept “interminability” as a legitimate need of the patient, unlike the tendency to treat it as a problem or as a negative phenomenon indicating an unsuccessful therapy. I present clinical vignettes demonstrating how some patients require a therapist for an unlimited time, continuously or at intervals. These patients require the therapeutic secure base and do not aspire—nor should they be encouraged—to terminate therapy. From the empathic stance of self psychology, such prolonged needs may be respected and provided.
