Abstract

Intermetallic phases in the Fe-rich region of the ZrFe system are studied by X-ray diffraction and optical and electron microscopy. The chemical composition of each phase has been quantitatively measured in a electron microprobe. The stable phases found in this region are ZrFe2, Zr6Fe23 and (αFe). ZrFe2 is identified as a cubic Laves type phase (C15) and the ZrFe2/ZrFe2 + Zr6Fe23 boundary composition is 73 ± 1 at.% Fe. Zr6Fe23 is a cubic phase of the Th6Mn23 type and its composition is 80.0 ± 1.5 at.% Fe. The eutectic L ⇌ Zr6Fe23 + τ-Fe transformation temperature and composition are 1325°C and 91 ± 1 at.% Fe, respectively. The solubility of Zr in τ-Fe at 1012°C is 500 ± 50 appm and 1000 ± 100 appm close to the eutectic temperature.
