Abstract

Alloys of uranium and plutonium with tin were prepared by arc melting and the phases were identified by electron microprobe analysis. Compounds of the USn and PuSn binary systems were observed and tentatively identified as U 4Sn 7, USn 2, U 4Sn 5, USn, Pu 3Sn 7 and PuSn. MSn 3, M 3Sn 7, MSn 2, M 3Sn 5, MSn, M 5Sn 4 and M 5Sn 3 (M≡; U x Pu 1− x ) were identified in the ternary system. The melting temperatures and lattice parameters of MSn 3 vary linearly with the uranium-to-plutonium mass ratio. A comparison with isotypic compounds of the UPb and PuPb systems is made.
