Abstract
Alloys of uranium and plutonium with tin were prepared by arc melting and the phases were identified by electron microprobe analysis. Compounds of the USn and PuSn binary systems were observed and tentatively identified as U 4Sn 7, USn 2, U 4Sn 5, USn, Pu 3Sn 7 and PuSn. MSn 3, M 3Sn 7, MSn 2, M 3Sn 5, MSn, M 5Sn 4 and M 5Sn 3 (M≡; U x Pu 1− x ) were identified in the ternary system. The melting temperatures and lattice parameters of MSn 3 vary linearly with the uranium-to-plutonium mass ratio. A comparison with isotypic compounds of the UPb and PuPb systems is made.
