Abstract

Abstract Earlier magnetisation and susceptibility measurements on the Yb 1- x Y x CuAl system have shown that up to x = 0.7 the intermediate valence state of Yb in this quasi-ternary compound remains unchanged by Y substitution. By means of a modified way of measuring the magnetisation in high fields on samples of better quality then the used in the earlier investigations we were able to detect the characteristic features of YbCuAl even in a compound in which 99% of the Yb atoms have been substituted by Y. From this it is concluded that a single-ion description of the IV state is appropriate.
