Abstract

• We question whether the idea of intermediate ecosystem services is useful. • We suggest an alternative perspective based on the idea of ecosystem function. • Ecosystem functions are the structures and processes that give rise to services. • The new perspective links to emerging concepts of ecosystem condition and capacity. • The term intermediate service should be restricted to its use in accounting.
