Abstract

The role and function of intermediaries is to mediate the relationship between organizations and their stakeholders. Some intermediaries, such as trade associations, represent and work in the interest of an industry and its member organizations. When a trade association is formed, the member organizations create a new social order among themselves. Creating a trade association can be understood as a way for member organizations to affect the environment making it less uncertain. Other types of intermediaries, such as trade unions or advocacy groups, represent and work in the interest of specific stakeholder groups (i.e., employees and consumers). Consultancies, think tanks, governmental agencies, and the media can also be defined as intermediaries.
