Abstract

Studies on interlinguistic relations and linguistic rights are relevant in the contemporary European socio-political framework and in Ukraine. Since this is our first attempt (2013-14) to handle the issue of linguistic rights in general, and those of Ukraine in particular, the theoretical framework will rely upon the already established international criteria on linguistic rights (e.g. European Charter for Regional or Minority Languages 1992; Ukrainian Constitution 1992 etc.). In this article we shall compare Italian language situation and its approach to minority languages with the Ukrainian experience. Special attention will be paid to the case of the Trentino-Alto Adige / Süd Tirol (Italy) compared with the contested linguistic rights in the Donbass area and Crimea (Ukraine).
