Abstract

Pituitary corticotropic AtT 20 cells were found to synthesize [ 3H]acetylcholine, when they were incubated with [ 3H]choline. Treatment of the cells with picomolar concentrations of human interleukin-1β inhibited [ 3H]acetylcholine production. This effect was specific, since two antisera, directed against human interleukin-1β neutralized the inhibitory action of interleukin-1β. A possible implication of the inhibitory action of interleukin-1 on acetylcholine production in neuronal transmission disorders is discussed.
