Abstract
In a layered material like YBa 2 Cu 3 O x , the effect of Coulomb repulsion is substantially reduced if Cooper pairs are formed out of electrons on neighboring layers. The strong coupling calculation shows that inter-layer pairing cannot coexist with intra-layer pairing. We give the condition for inter-layer pairing in the form of a phase diagram. Stability against impurities is also discussed. Small nuclear spin relaxation rate should distinguish inter-layer pairing from intra-layer pairing.
