Abstract

Spin echo double resonance has been used to detect the spin-spin coupling between Cu spins on adjacent ${\mathrm{CuO}}_{2}$ layers. These measurements, performed in the superconducting state, on the three-layer Pb-doped bismuth high-${\mathrm{T}}_{\mathrm{c}}$ compound demonstrate the existence of interlayer exchange coupling as well as interlayer correlations in the quasiparticle excitations. An estimate of the interlayer exchange constant ${\mathrm{J}}_{\mathrm{\ensuremath{\perp}}}$ is found to be 43 K, 3% of the intralayer value.
