Abstract

Interlayer exchange interaction between magnetic layers, separated by nonmagnetic, insulating or semiconducting spacer is calculated. We consider coupling mediated by carriers which are either free to move within the nonmagnetic layer or are localised on impurities. The resulting interaction is purely ferromagnetic and long ranged, and can be responsible for recently observed interlayer coupling in magnetic semiconductor multilayers.
