Abstract

An interlaboratory study (ILS) involving 15 laboratories from North America, Europe, and Japan, was conducted to validate crack size measurements on various types of fracture toughness specimens by means of two commonly used methodologies: the 9-Point Average (9PA) method and the Area Average (AA) method. The results of this ILS confirm the findings of previous investigation published by the author in 2021, which showed that crack sizes measured by the two methods are in close agreement, and therefore we recommend the AA method be included as an alternative to the other approach in all fatigue and fracture test methods that require crack sizes to be measured.
