Abstract

This article's focus is on interhemispheric interaction in relation to cognitive processes. Commissural fibers facilitate interhemispheric transfer, which in turn supports several cognitive functions, such as attention, memory, and language. Two major theories have been proposed to explain the specific mechanisms of interhemispheric communication, lateralization, and hemispheric specialization: the excitatory model and the inhibitory model. Neuropsychological and neuropsychiatric manifestations of callosal syndromes are also discussed.
