Abstract

We demonstrate a consistent interferometric interpretation for two fundamental features of light: partial electromagnetic coherence and partial polarization. The electromagnetic degree of coherence contains the modulation visibilities of both the intensity fringes and the polarization (Stokes) parameters on two-beam interference, while the degree of polarization amounts simply to the visibility of the polarization state when the beam interferes with itself.
