Abstract

Numerous laboratory demonstrations have confirmed that extremely high sensitivity may be achieved using interferometric optical fibre strain sensors. The authors discuss the application of optical fibre strain sensors to the measurement of dynamic strains. A practical system using a fibre embedded within a composite material is the strain sensor has demonstrated a dynamic range extending from 0.1 to several thousand microstrain with a frequency response limited only by the detection electronics. The concepts of interferometric sensors are also compatible with multiplexing, and a simple system involving two sensors has been demonstrated. The measured values of strain are in very close agreement with those obtained from resistive strain gauges. However, the reliability of the fibre optic device far exceeds that of the resistive device.
