Abstract

This paper is concerned with an experimental method to measure three—dimensional stress fields in plates. The method consists of the measurement of the change in optical paths for two orientations of polarized light with a Mach—Zehnder interferometer. This is combined with the determination of the change in plate thickness by means of a Michelson interferometer. In this way, averaged (through plate thickness) stresses are obtained.
