Abstract

Some pesticides in milk interfere with the phosphatase test. Baygon and sevin formed a blue color with the Folin-Ciocalteu phenol reagent in milk. 1-Naphthol, a degradation product of sevin, had the same effect in pasteurized milk. Dimethylcarbamates decreased phenol formation in raw milk, but in pasteurized and in under-pasteurized milk a true phosphatase test was obtained. Tetramethyl thiuram disulphide at 25μg/.5ml and at higher concentrations influenced the test of under-pasteurized milk. Phosphamidon and 0:0 Dimethyl 2:2 dichlorovinyl phosphate at 5μg/.5ml gave phenol values in under-pasteurized milk equivalent to that in raw milk. Twelve pesticides decreased phenol formation in raw milk.
