Abstract
From the fact that interference fringe visibility is not always proportional to the modulus of the coherence degree, we derive the possibility of a perfect visibility of fringes without a perfect coherence everywhere in the interference field. A similar situation was known to exist for spatial coherence, but it is impossible for temporal coherence. Here we consider it in the case of polarisation coherence; we express a necessary and sufficient condition for perfect polarisation coherence with the intention to depart from it. Since crystal optic interferences are described in a situation where polarisation coherence is not perfect, we describe examples with no polariser or analyser and yet with perfect fringe visibility.
