Abstract

Aerodynamics in automobiles is generally optimised on the views back-minding style and fuel economy, but, whatever may be the optimisation, a phenomenon of parasitic interference drag exists on the interaction between any two or more automobiles at all range of speeds on road. This study deals with the characteristic of this interference drag, in terms of its co-efficient (Cd int) calculated at various possible positions of interaction between the car and the truck at higher speeds (25 m/s). This interference drag can be prompted as one of the main reasons affecting the stability of any vehicle under interaction with another on road in an aerodynamic background. A comprehensive dealing is thus required in the determination of the interference drag characteristics when a phenomenon of overtaking is considered. This case is dealt in this paper precisely at 25 m/s velocity and steady wind conditions through computational fluid dynamic technique, considering a car and a truck travelling at adjacent lanes on a freeway and separated by a distance of 0.5 times the breadth of the car, considered during the model construction.
