Abstract

Friction stir lap welding of 304 and 430 dissimilar stainless steels was performed by using Cu interlayer. The joint was formed by two kinds of metallurgical processes. 430 stainless steel and Cu foil were joined by brazing process because of the melting of Cu, and the 430/Cu interface consisted of Fe- and Cu-based solid solutions. 304 stainless steel and Cu foil were joined by solid state diffusion process due to low interface temperature, and the Cu/304 interface contained Fe- and Cu-based solid solutions. The maximum shear load of the joint with Cu interlayer reached 2776 N, increased by 62% compared to the joint without interlayer. Cu interlayer promoted the diffusion of atoms at the interface and decreased the interfacialstress, thus it can significantly improve the performance of the joint.
