Abstract

Gas−liquid scattering experiments can help elucidate the pathways for solvation and dissociation of DCl molecules in solvents such as pure and salty glycerol and salty water. These acidic gas−protic solvent systems display rich dynamic behavior because the gas phase provides an escape route for transient products, including DCl that desorbs before reaction and HCl created by rapid D → H exchange. Our observations shed light on the roles of dissolved salts on acid dissociation and proton transport at the surfaces of protic liquids.
