Abstract

Considers a system of two superposed fluid layers F1 and F2 and studies the linear response of the air-F1 and F1-F2 interfaces to a modulation of the surface tension at the air-F1 interface due to inhomogeneous heating by infrared radiation. The deflection of the F1-F2 interface is shown to be strongly enhanced relative to that of the air-F1 interface. Making this deflection visible is the principle of a very sensitive IR-visible image converter.
