Abstract

A 16-year-old girl who had a bimaxillary osteotomy was given our routine steroid regimen of methylprednisolone 250mg intravenously at induction of anaesthesia followed by three further doses at 6-h intervals. On the 6th postoperative day she displayed an array of psychiatric manifestations including delusions of bodily change, paranoia, auditory hallucinations, and disorientation, which warranted referral to a consultant psychiatrist. She was treated initially with chlorpromazine and subsequently, discharged herself from hospital.
