Abstract

Interest groups have played a role in European policy-making ever since the European Economic Community was created. Their influence, functioning, and regulation have been extensively analysed in the academic literature. Interestingly enough, the concept of ‘interest representation’ is hardly used in this literature and the question of ‘representation’ in relation to interest groups remains absent as a topic of systematic inquiry, as is well illustrated by two recent literature reviews on ‘interest groups’ (Eising 2008) and ‘civil society’ (Finke 2007) in the EU.1 KeywordsCivil SocietyInterest GroupSocial PartnerSystem RepresentativenessParticipatory DemocracyThese keywords were added by machine and not by the authors.
