Abstract

Abstract Extreme specialisation has accompanied the marked progress made in science over the past two centuries. This specialisation has led to wide recognition of the need for interdisciplinary research in the sciences. Here the history of growing specialisation in the humanities and the consequent need for interdisciplinary measures are treated with particular reference to the Reallexikon fur Antike und Christentum.
