Abstract

AbstractPractising engineering designers in general ‘do not like’ systematic approaches to designing, because of their ‘rigidity’, which they find to be incompatible with their own experience and creativity. On the other hand they need more and more specialized advanced knowledge and tools of external researchers who are however usually not familiar with the company specific products, knowledge and experience. We would like to outline how this situation can be enhanced with use of the “system map” of Engineering Design Science (EDS) knowledge and methods based on the Theory of Technical Systems (TTS). This paper is especially focused on use of ‘Design for X’ (DfX) and ‘Prediction of X’ (PoX) knowledge and methods where X usually means a TS property class, subclass, sub-subclass or a property respectively.KeywordsDesign engineeringTheory of technical systemDesign for XPrediction of XEDI module
