Intercultural Communication

Abstract

The very first gate of the labyrinth is to locate Chinese intercultural communication (ICC) studies in world history and cultural studies, and understand the post-colonial context for ICC scholars in China. Since the middle of the 20th century after World War II, world culture has largely been preoccupied with the problematic of colonial times. Communication-between-Cultures is a trans-disciplinary field in China in which at least three main disciplines are deeply involved: Linguistics, International relations, and Communication research. They share the same categories of research perspective: Communication-between-Cultures, whether cross-cultural, intercultural, or trans-cultural, is translated as a single Chinese concept: kua wen hua. The first and only national intercultural communication association, the Chinese Intercultural Communication Association, was founded in 1995 within the field of linguistics. The chapter demonstrates a program entitled the China ICC Research & Training Program in July 2013, and presents a new annual book recording Chinese ICC academic research.
