Abstract

In the production grinding of Alnico 5, small grains break loose from the body of a magnet leaving a void. This pickout problem can be avoided by controlling the cooling rate to about 250°C/min from the molten condition. Magnetic and physical strength measurements as well as metallographic studies explain the need for cooling-rate control to achieve the best compromise between remanence and physical strength.
