Abstract
Asparagus ( Asparagus officinalis L.) was grown in two soils in Nova Scotia, both initially low in fertility. Six legume green manure species were intercropped with recently transplanted asparagus and compared with a control for their effect on stem yield, spear yield, fern tissue analysis and soil fertility during and following incorporation. All intercrops reduced September stem counts and May spear yields for at least one year. However, following liming, fertilization and incorporation of the intercropped legumes, the mineral content of asparagus ferns was nearly as high on the imperfectly drained soil as they were on the best soils used in this study.
