Abstract

Summary The relationships between four body image measures were investigated, using 42 hospitalized male chronic schizophrenics. The measures were: (a) the adjustable body distorting mirror; (b) body cathexis-self-cathexis scale; (c) barrier and penetration scores on the Rorschach inkblot test; and (d) Body Experience Questionnaire. The Ammons Full Range Picture Vocabulary Test was also administered. Some significant correlations were found. However, the results indicated a general lack of correlation between the different measures of body image. It was suggested that a “unitary body image construct” position was not supported by the results of this study. It was also suggested that future investigations focus on exploring the parameters of body image.
