Abstract

Experiments were conducted to study the inter-clonal variation in wood properties of 13 selected clones of Eucalyptus camaldulensis Dehnh. obtained from the provenance cum progeny testing trials established during 1996 at Karunya Nagar in Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu and Sathyavedu in Chittoor district of Andhra Pradesh by the Institute of Forest Genetics and Tree Breeding, Coimbatore. The characters that were studied include specific gravity, vessel morphology (vessel length and vessel diameter) and fibre morphology (fibre length, fibre width, fibre lumen width, fibre wall thickness, Runkel ratio, shape factor, and fibre length/fibre width). Fibre length, fibre width, lumen width and fibre wall thickness showed significant differences among the clones and were different from the results obtained from the previous research works. The results of the present study revealed the suitability of the above clones for paper and pulp making.
