Abstract
A theory is presented for a plasma unstable to the interchange mode which shows that longitudinal current flow to conducting end plates can be destabilizing if the sheath impedance at the end plates is large or if the growth rate is small. This destabilizing effect is experimentally verified in a multipole-mirror device. For large growth rates, a stability criterion on the cold background plasma density is derived and compared with several experiments in the literature.
