Abstract

An enhancement of intercalation by ion implantation has been observed. It is shown that by seeding the graphite sample with 23Na ions through ion implantation, subsequent intercalation with sodium using conventional techniques reaches a higher sodium concentration than for an unimplanted sample. This enhancement has been also achieved by ion implantation of argon (40 Ar) which is a chemically inert gas, implying that this enhanced intercalation of sodium into graphite is due to implantation-induced structural disorder rather than a chemical effect associated with the implanted species.
