Abstract

The results of 57Fe Mössbauer study show that the layered compound CdPS 3 intercalates ferrocene Fe(C 5H 5) 2 molecules. The Mössbauer spectrum of the intercalate {CdPS 3, x[Fe(C 5H 5) 2]} exhibits lines characteristics of ionised species of ferrocene. Three types of ferrocene with different extent of ionisation have been identified from the quadrupolar splitting and isomer shift data. It has been shown that water co-intercalates with ferrocene and leads to complete ionisation of the previously partially ionised ferrocene molecule. The presence of three types of lines in the anhydrous form of the intercalate has been explained in terms of three different environments of Fe(C 5H 5) 2 in CdPS 3. It has been suggested that the electron from the ferrocene molecule is transferred to the P-P antibonding orbital. 31P NMR shift observed in the hydrated intercalate upholds the suggestion.
