Abstract

This paper presents a proposal for a ‘Model of Querying’ which, when implemented, will help a wide variety of different users to query an Office Filing Facility (OFF) effectively. It motivates the model, discusses the various aspects of it, and outlines its advantages. The paper surveys current information systems and looks at their advantages and disadvantages with respect to the types of objects we would expect to store in an OFF and the operations we might perform on stored objects. It looks at various attempts to combine Information Retrieval, Artificial Intelligence and Data Base Management System techniques and concludes that no resulting system is adequate for the office environment. Finally, as a result of the survey, we recommend that the implemented model have certain attributes.
