Abstract

The purpose of this study is to investigate the effectiveness of instructional aids for art history survey students. Use of an interactive multimedia (IM) computer program designed to help students acquire and retain a deeper understanding of works of art is compared to traditional slide study. Analysis of students' written responses to works of art revealed that IM users searched more extensively for information, demonstrated both more understandings and misunderstandings, and experienced carryover effects from the first experiment to the second. These results indicate that once students are familiar with the technology, IM is an effective instructional format for facilitating the acquisition of advanced knowledge and skills necessary for insightful responses to works of art.
