Abstract

A prototype finite element simulation system for the interactive modelling of 2D aquifer-averaged or vertical (axisymmetric) fluid density-coupled flow and contaminant transport in groundwater is presented. The system is designed as a PC or engineering workstation environment to allow the easy and efficient use of complex groundwater modelling technology in a problem — rather than model-oriented style. The emphasis is on aspects of the model generation and modification in the form of screen-menu-driven, interactive mesh and problem attribute editors, features of the simulator kernel and postprocessor requirements. The capabilities and advantages of such an interactive approach are shown and discussed for a PC implementation applied to engineering consulting activities.
