Abstract

This paper tests the proposition that the potential for regrowth in a herb after defoliation is likely to be large even in species with well-developed chemical defence, and unlikely to be dependent on a high root/shoot ratio, and also tests the degree to which various factors affect the extent of compensation. The response to simulated herbivory was studied in the annual Senecio vulgaris in a ten-week glasshouse experiment during summer.
