Abstract
The Ponzo, Muller-Lyer, and vertical-horizontal illusions were generated with real edges, subjective contours, and various control patterns. Subjective contours were differentially effective over control conditions only for the Ponzo illusion. The data are discussed in light of the various theories of subjective contours and illusions.
