Abstract

Saponin used at a concentration of 1·7 mg ml −1 caused O BFS 1860, A Cruzeiro and SAT 3 Bec 1/65 to aggregate, whereas viruses of the C serotype, notably C Noville, were not affected. Studies with radioactive viruses indicated that crude saponin did not cause significant degradation of 146S particles. None of the viruses was affected by 1·5 mg ml −1 of Quil A, the purified adjuvant component of saponin.
