Abstract

The three-dimensional elastodynamic response of two coplanar penny-shaped cracks embedded in an infinite elastic solid subjected to transient elastic waves is investigated. A time-domain boundary integral equation method is used for calculating the time dependent crack opening displacements and subsequently the dynamic stress intensity factors. Numerical computations are carried out for various incident transient longitudinal and transverse waves. The results are presented in graphical form and discussed. The effect of the crack distance on the dynamic stress intensity factors is determined.
