Abstract

Illumination inhibits respiratory electron transport in the photosynthetic bacterium Rhodobacter sphaeroides [1,2]. It is generally accepted that this is caused by an increase in the transmembrane electrochemical potential difference [2], although there is some evidence for a kinetic interaction via those components of the respiratory and photosynthetic electron transport chains which are common to them both [3].
