Abstract

In cats with gastric fistulas, observed highest rates of acid secretion in microequivalents per minute were greater with combinations of stimulants (histamine plus gastrin 130, histamine plus pentagastrin 123, histamine plus bethanechol 117) than with single stimulants (histamine 108, pentagastrin 110). However, the observed highest rates with combinations did not exceed the calculated maximal rates with single stimulants. Also, calculated maximal responses to single stimulants and to combinations did not differ significantly. Cat is like man in that combinations do not give greater observed rates than calculated maximum to single stimulants, and these two species differ from dog in which combinations do give observed (and calculated) highest rates that are greater than calculated maximum for single stimulants. Potentiation should be defined as response to pairs of stimulants greater than calculated maximal response to either stimulant singly. So defined, potentiation of acid secretion has been demonstrated only in dog.
