Abstract

Experimental results on propagation and interaction of intense transverse waves in a thin rubber belt excited by a moving piston are given. A new type of nonlinear wave (“quasi-soliton”) has been displayed which represents a metastable state capable of splitting up on head-on collisions and giving rise to a new “quasi-soliton”. As distinct from the classical solitons, the new type of wave has been observed to form a non-one-parameter family.
