Abstract

I discuss the interaction of radiation with matter in spherical and axisymmetric accretion flows onto black holes and emphasize the similarities between spherical accretion flow and disk-like flow, especially ADAF. As in spherical flow, two different solution families exist in ADAF. One is the usual ADAF where interaction of radiation with matter is minimal with negligible radiative cooling. The other is preheated ADAF in which the infalling gas is heated by Compton scattering off the photons produced at inner hot flow. The two-dimensional thermal structure of ADAF is also discussed along with the possibility of polar outflow or wind.
