Abstract

THE discovery by Stotz et al.1,2 that the injection of physiological doses of œstrogens into ovariectomized rats produces large increases in the activity of uterine peroxidase and that several tissues with high rates of cell renewal also have high peroxidase activity has aroused interest in the possible role of this enzyme in cellular proliferation and growth. In work3,4 on horseradish peroxidase, it has already been shown that this enzyme could catalyse the interaction between œstrogens and certain amino-acids and proteins under aerobic conditions, and this communication deals with a similar reaction involving the pyridine nucleotides.
