Abstract

We present a theoretical study of the energy deposition by slow multiply charged ions interacting with an electron gas and its dependence on the electronic configuration (excitation state) of the particle. Applications of the results to explain experimental findings of projectile induced electron emission and energy loss as a function of charge state are also discussed.
