Interaction of molecular nitrogen with iron clusters

Abstract

Because of the exceptionally high strength of the N----~N bond, in the production of bound nitrogen -in particular, in the ammonia-synthesis reaction -the limiting state is usually the interaction of molecular nitrogen with a transition metal. In a consideration of the interaction of N2 with an iron atom (in the zero-valent state), the conclusion was arrived at [i] that the linear complex Fe--N N~is energetically favorable; however, in the ~ complex N
