Abstract

The interaction of microbands with grain boundaries in mild steel have been studied by TEM. Microbands were observed to propagate across the interface or stop at the grain boundary. In both cases the microbands correspond to a (110) slip system and no non-crystallographic propagation was observed. Microbands and slip bands behave similarly in front of an interface, and it is therefore suggested that the interaction of microbands with grain boundaries depends on the same crystallographic orientation conditions as those proposed for slip band propagation.
