Abstract

1. The behavior of lubricants in the gap between rubbing surfaces depends not so much on the method of feeding the lubricant to the friction zone, as on the state of the surface layer of the material due to friction. The character of the material of the rubbing parts is of particular importance, owing probably to the fact that the wetting properties of oil and the way it reacts with the rubbing surfaces vary with the chemical composition of the latter. 2. With porous friction pair components the lubrication conditions are greatly improved. Too high a porosity of bearing materials in the case of forced lubrication has a harmful effect; however, the optimum porosity is 10–15%.
